Science

We want to inspire students to ask about the world around them and not just accept things because they are told to. Of course, GCSE grades are important, but the enjoyment of learning chemistry, biology and physics should not be overshadowed by this. Our specialist teachers are extraordinary individuals always looking for ways to spark interest and enthusiasm in our students.

In Form 9 we believe it is important to lay down good foundations of scientific skills that will be needed throughout the GCSE course. Within the first term ‘science of warfare’ is studied – water rockets, reaction tests and smoke bombs! Plenty of chances for investigating ideas and learning how to adapt methods to collect useful results. In the Lent term of Form 9 the pupils use these enquiry skills to take on an extended project of their choosing to achieve their Bronze CREST award from the British Science Association.

Once we are confident we have enthusiastic, determined and inquisitive budding scientists we start the GCSE course.

Throughout the Senior School pupils have six hours of science – two of each science with specialist teachers. Triple science students then have an extra two hours of science, covering multiple subjects and topics with their triple science teacher.

Our lessons use a variety of approaches including ICT, practical work, discussion, concept-mapping and group work as well as teacher-led presentations.
